About A Menopause Test And a List of Menopause Symptoms

by Patsy Hamilton

A menopause test that doctors can perform checks the level of follicle stimulating hormones circulating in a womans blood stream. There is a long list of menopause symptoms that a woman may suffer from. The most common complaints are hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings and headaches. The exact cause of these and other symptoms is unknown. Not all women experience them and some women experience others.

Another menopause test that a doctor may perform involves taking a sample of the cells of the vaginal wall. This is a simple and painless procedure. An individual womans list of menopause symptoms may include vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. During menopause the vaginal walls thin and vaginal cells do not contain as much estrogen as they once did. This menopause test will help your doctor determine an appropriate treatment.

Over the years researchers have evaluated a long list of menopause symptoms to try and determine which ones are related to decreased estrogen production, which are simply related to aging and which are related to life events that may coincide with menopause. The following symptoms are sometimes associated with menopause: dizziness, lack of energy, diarrhea, constipation, depression, backaches, upset stomach, headaches, migraines, cold sweats, body aches, stiff joints, shortness of breath at rest and upon exertion, nervous tension, urine control problems, bladder infection problems, discomfort passing urine, rapid heart beat, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, vaginal discharge, dry eyes, nose mouth and skin, weight gain, breast soreness or tenderness, tingling in the hands or feet, sore throat, trouble sleeping, chest pain on exertion, loss of appetite, swelling of body parts and difficulty concentrating.

About 50% of all women experience hot flashes and night sweats at some point during the menopausal transition. Only about 10% experience them during the years leading up to menopause. The percentage increases as menopause approaches and in women who have them, they often continue for three years following menopause, if they are not treated. Treatment options include hormone replacement therapy, stress management techniques, acupuncture, herbal remedies and dietary supplements.

Natural estrogen produced by the body is known to affect the elasticity, thickness and moisture in of the skin. Thus, vaginal dryness and dry skin are probably symptoms of low estrogen levels. Estrogen creams and a ring that is inserted into the vagina and releases small amounts of estrogen on a regular basis are treatment options for vaginal dryness. Researchers are working on a cream that contains red clover isoflavones to relieve dry skin, improve skin thickness and elasticity.

Breast soreness and tenderness decreases as menopause approaches and is not experienced by most women during or following menopause. Treatment options include anti-inflammatories and analgesics. Supplements containing berries from the Chaste tree have shown some effectiveness and are non-estrogenic.

Headaches and migraines may be associated with fluctuating hormonal levels. Women who experience migraines during puberty often see them return during menopause. Some migraine remedies contain relatively large amounts of caffeine, which triggers hot flashes in many women. There are natural pain relievers that may be effective for headache and migraine relief.

Trouble sleeping is often caused by night sweats. It can also be a symptom of depression. Chest pain and shortness of breath should be evaluated by a physician. Heart palpitations or rapid heart beat is often associated with hot flashes and is not usually dangerous, but women who have a long list of menopause symptoms should have a complete physical to rule out other health problems. Doctors do not always perform a menopause test, unless a woman requests it.

Signs of Menopause

by Jodie Phillips

All women in their mid 40s and above the age of 50 experience menopause. The complete cessation of a womans periods is called menopause. This can be natural or medically induced due to surgery. It can last for a few years. During this time, there are several hormonal changes in a womans body. These changes emerge as the signs of menopause. There are several signs of menopause like severe mood changes, bad temper and dejection. Physically too, a womans body undergoes several changes.

Women experience a decrease in bone density with the onset of menopause. The calcium absorption of the body reduces. This results in repeated fractures and brittle nails that can be a sign of menopause. Women must therefore supplement their diet with dairy products. They must stop or reduce the intake of tea and coffee.

Dry skin is another sign of menopause. It is partly due to aging and exposure to the sun. A generous use of moisturizers can solve this problem. A woman can experience sudden hot flushes and break out in sweat. At night, the same hot flushes can disrupt sleep resulting in restlessness. These flushes are because of restriction of blood vessels. This can make the menopausal woman feel tired and sapped of energy all the time.

Urinary incontinence is also a sign of menopause. Because of changes in hormones, the tissues of the body lose their elasticity causing loss of control over the bladder. A menopausal woman can experience vaginal dryness and loss of interest in sexual matters.

After the age of 50, a woman must get a regular check up of her cholesterol levels. Increased cholesterol level can be a sign of menopause. A woman must exercise control over her diet and include green vegetables in her diet.

Many signs of menopause like falling hair or stiff joints can be confused with those of aging. However, it is a result of reduced production of estrogen and progesterone hormones. One can even have sudden excess hair growth due to over production of testosterone.

Some women have trouble in remembering things. This loss of memory can be a sign of menopause. Women become oversensitive and seem to cry at the slightest provocation. They feel left out and lonely. These changes in mental attitude are due to menopause.

Menopause is thus a difficult time for most women on the other side of fifty. With a good knowledge of the signs of menopause, one must handle women with greater understanding and sensitivity towards their feelings. Knowledge about the signs of menopause can also be helpful in tackling the problems better.

Man Health, Andropause and Menopause

by Shane Wade

All of us should already know that while the end of menstruation is the symptom which is called menopause. There is a on going highly debated topic called andropause. Have you heard? Andropause is the male equivalent to menopause. Did you know that? This industrialized society we live in have turned andropause into a man's condition. The symptoms that accompanies andropause are: prostate problems, low sperm count, weight gain, low sex drive, anxiety and low levels of zinc within a man's body. There are so many other symptoms that are associated with andropause as well.

Andropause. Is this fact or fiction? This is a big controversial thing in the medical world today who are debating at conventions about this. There is no concrete consensus at the moment so don't get alarmed.

So my friend, if you are experiencing memory, sleeping problems, hair loss, your cranky, aches and pains, decreased in sexual performance, etc..... Yes their are more symptoms, then it just might be this thing called andropause. No more in blaming our women when they are not doing well. Yes men, I am sorry to tell you that we as men have issues too. Maybe a little of erectile dysfunction or depression?

These symptoms can be battled. and for starters, you need to start changing your lifestyle. A great diet and exercise. And also you have to slow down on the alcohol and do something about that smoking.

Yes this andropause thing is still a highly debatable topic with doctors doubting if it even exists. The main reasoning that is still being agreed upon is, what the proper definition will be. Their is no clear physical symptom that is used to diagnose andropause. We just have to wait and see. In the meantime, enjoy life and have lots of sex(only if your in the mood. And if your not, or looking for some transitions, there are great tips over at my site about various sexually men issues and what you can do about it.) Andropause: Fact or Fiction.....

Hot Flashes Menopause Symptoms

Fat Intake, Cardiovascular Health and Menopause

by Michael Russell

Naturopathic medicine is useful not only for treating the acute discomforts of perimenopausal women, but also has a role to play in preventing fatal diseases caused by the lack of estrogen during menopause. After menopause, women are at significant risk of heart and blood vessel disease. Indeed, cardiovascular disease is on top of the list when talking about causes of death of women in Western societies, claiming twice as many lives every year as cancer. Although these diseases tend to attack women later than men, usually after menopause, this should not stop women from looking for ways to decrease their risk. Additionally, the survival rate of women who suffer heart attacks is lower than that of men, regardless of age. There are several nutritional strategies post menopausal women can use to decrease their risk of cardiovascular disease. These good nutritional habits will also reduce their risk of cancer and obesity.

Reducing the amount of fat in your diet will lower your risk of heart disease and cancer. Fats and oils are extremely high in calories and you take in excessive amounts of them, they slow down your metabolic rate, keeping you from losing weight and contributing to obesity. A high-fat diet can be eliminated simply by changing you eating habits and cooking techniques. A basic principle that will help you cut the amount of fat in your diet is to cut down on meat and dairy products in to increase the proportion of your diet that consists of grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables. Avoid frying foods and roasting or baking meats in their own fat. Broiling, boiling, steaming and dry-baking are better. The on exception to this rule is stir-frying, which can be done with a minimum of added oil in a non-stick, non-aluminum pan. When you must use oil, use small amounts of cold-pressed vegetable oils such as canola, olive, sunflower, or grapeseed oil and cook your food slowly, at low temperatures, to avoid having the oil become oxidized. Resist the temptation to add salt or use prepackaged sauces; instead, add flavor to your foods with vegetable extracts, tomato puree, herbs and spices.

When selecting a prepared food product such as breakfast cereal, take the time to read the product information on the packaging. You may be surprised to find that several popular brands have very high levels of fat, salt and sugar. Good low-fat alternatives to processed breakfast cereals are oatmeal and natural, unsweetened muesli, as well as barley and brown rice, which can be boiled and eaten as a hot cereal with the addition of little low-fat milk. You can also make a mixture of sunflower seeds, linseed and almonds. Grind them into a fine meal in a food processor or grinder. This is an excellent concentrated source of omega 6 essential fatty acids, fiber, natural plant estrogens, proteins, calcium, selenium, vitamin E, vitamin A and B vitamins. Keeping it fresh is important; store it in the refrigerator.

You do not have to be menopausal to make these dietary modifications to reduce cardiovascular risk, but all the more you should when you are at this crucial reproductive stage. Start making healthy choices and feel the benefits.

Diet and Menopause

by Nitin Chhoda

For many women, it's a period that is associated with more than just physical discomfort. The emotional stress linked with pre-menstrual syndrome has the potential to cause disruptions in any woman's life. Fortunately, there is a lot that can be done to take control. A vast majority of the symptoms of PMS, and even menopause can be minimized, with some dietary measures.

DIET TO COMBAT PMS.

Classically, a woman experiences one or more of the following, in the week preceding menstruation - anxiety, tension, headaches, depression, breast tenderness, water retention, bloating, low energy and irritability.

Vitamin B6 has been shown in many studies to help many pre menstrual sufferers. Lately, researchers have discovered that Vitamin B6 combined with zinc is even more effective. (The latter helps convert B6 to its active form in the body).

Cereals made from wheat and bran, beans, lentils are rich in Vitamin B6.

Magnesium is particularly effective in reducing the syptoms of breast tenderness and swelling. More recently, scientists have found that GLA or gamma-linoleic acid; found in evening primrose oils has a 60 % success rate. (Both magnesium and GLA have several other beneficial effects in the body.) They are essential for all of us, but even more so for those with PMS.

On average, within 3-5 months on a diet or supplement program high in Vitamin B6, zinc and magnesium, a significant improvement can be achieved.

In some cases of PMS, hormonal changes disturb blood sugar control and bring on sugar (and stimulant) urges, associated with tiredness and irritation. In such cases, a low sugar, no stimulant diet can make a remarkable difference. Avoid sodas, concentrated juices, sauces and high amounts of caffeine. In a small percentage of women, PMS indicates a pronounced hormonal imbalance, which responds neither to diet, nor supplements. Such an imbalance is usually due to estrogen dominance and a relative lack of the hormone progesterone. This condition can be bought about due to prolonged use of the birth control pill. It needs testing and treatment by a qualified nutrition consultant or doctor.

WINNING THE WAR AGAINST MENOPAUSE.

The natural transition from the childbearing phase of life for every woman, menopause often occurs between the ages of 45 to 50 (sometimes earlier). It may arrive without many symptoms, but is often accompanied by a host of them such as hot flashes, night sweats, and tiredness and joint pains.

CALCIUM - THE SKELETON IN YOUR CUPBOARD.

Calcium assumes far greater importance during these years. In fact, a combination of calcium and magnesium in a 'bone formula' tablet (in addition to vitamin D) is often more effective than standard calcium tablets. These work best when eaten with high protein foods (meat, eggs, beans) and prior to bedtime, since calcium helps promote sleep. Ideally, younger women should start taking calcium supplements (and not wait till menopause) to build up the calcium 'stockpiles' in the bones. Start consuming high calcium foods such as non-fat skimmed milk, dairy products and beans.

FOLATE - THE FINAL FIGHTER.

Vitamin B9 or folic acid (40-60 mg) is very beneficial. Oranges , spinach, leafy green vegetables, beans, and walnuts are rich sources of folic acid.

Why Women Should Not Smoke?

by Monalisa Hyden

There are many reasons behind why a woman starts smoking, mainly to get accepted in a particular group of friends or to fight against depression. Women begin smoking usually as teenagers, generally before high school graduation. And the younger a girl is when she starts, the more heavily she is likely to use tobacco as an adult. Teenage girls are just as likely to smoke as are boys. Whatever may be the reason, tobacco smoking harms the women in the same way as it does to men, but we can add a few more damages to the list for women.

As experts saysmoking is the most preventable cause of early death in this country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking-related diseases caused the deaths of about 178,000 women in each year from 1995-1999 and these women died 14.5 years earlier because of their smoking. Now, let me tell you in how many ways smoking affects a woman.

  • Cancer, the main risk is always there with smoking.

  • Smoking women reach natural menopause two years earlier than non-smokers.
  • Smoking women using oral contraceptives are ten times more at risk of heart attack and stroke compared to those who are smoking but not taking contraceptives.
  • Smoking women are at more risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke during the use of estrogens.
  • The fertility of smoking women is 72% then that of non-smokers.
  • Nicotine restricts blood flow that has a negative effect on sensation and arousal during sex.
  • Women who smoke during pregnancy experience preterm delivery, placenta previa, premature rupture of membranes, miscarriage, and neonatal death.
  • The more she smokes during pregnancy, lower the birth weight of the infant.
  • Cigarette smoking increases the likelihood of sudden infant death syndrome including infant and prenatal deaths.
  • Babies born to smoking mothers suffer from learning disorders, attention deficit disorder and disruptive behavior.
  • Infants, whose mothers smoked during the time of pregnancy, have the same nicotine levels in their bloodstream as smoking adults and even they go through nicotine withdrawal syndrome during their initial days of life.
  • Children born to smoking mothers experience more ear aches, respiratory problems, colds, and illnesses requiring more pediatrician visits compared to children born to nonsmoking mothers.
Isnt it a long list of diseases and risks that comes with the nicotine pleasure to women? The decision is entirely yours, whether to quit or live with nicotine and lead an unhealthy, short life.

If you wish to quit smoking, as I always say, where there is a will, there is a wayliving without nicotine is not that tough. You just need to wish a Nicotine free life. Think before lighting up the next cigarette. Till then. keep the faith! :-)

The author, Monalisa Hyden, addresses psychological and health related issues. If you wish to help yourself and your loved ones in quit smoking, you can log on to http://www.chantixhome.com for more information and advice.

Understanding Your Symptoms of Menopause

by Suzie Springer

As a woman, you have probably been through many drastic changes in your life. Around early or late teen years came the concept of puberty and periods. Then for some came the miraculous, yet painful process of pregnancy. Once again, your body is ready to go through another hormonal change. It is important to learn and understand what your body will be going through. You will be thankful when you are prepared. Your loved ones will also be thankful when you have somewhat of a handle on this new experience.

Menopause can be identified with a few signs. The most popular sign is the start of irregular periods. Expect to go through abnormal vaginal bleeding. Your period may come once in every three months or so or two to three times a month. Some women come across heavy, painful bleeding, while others have barley any bleeding. It will feel like you are going through a uterine problems, but do not fear, this is the initial stage of menopause. The cause of these irregular periods is due to the fact that the ovaries are shutting down.

Along with wacky periods, you will experience symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and times of depression. Unfortunately, these symptoms can last as long as five years. More symptoms include hair loss, loss of libido, memory lapse, ringing ears, dry vagina, burning tongue/mouth, increased sensitivity to allergies, weight gain, decreased bone density, and muscle and joint soreness.

Among the physical hindrances that menopause brings, the worst symptoms would probably be the mental ones. While the physical symptoms can be annoying, the depression and mood swings can really take toll on a woman.

Now that you are aware of the symptoms, rest assured that there are many remedies. Visit a doctor who can help you through this time and prescribe you medication to ease some of the symptoms. The support of women friends who have gone through or are going through the same thing right now can offer you much encouragement and help you get through this new time in your life. Remember that you do not have to suffer alone.
